Güney Karadeniz gemilerinin teknolojik dönüşümü (1792-1829)

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, 1792-1829 yılları arasında Güney Karadeniz bölgesinde ticari gemiciliğin teknolojik dönüşümü incelenmiştir. Karadeniz’in uluslararası piyasalara entegre olmasıyla, 40 sene zarfında yelkenli gemilerde teknolojik atılım olmuş ve yeni gövde, yelken ve arma türleri, eskilerinin yerini almıştır. Bu makalenin temel argümanı, yeni piyasa koşullarının ve coğrafi faktörlerin teknolojik dönüşümü belirlediğidir. Her ne kadar yeni teknolojilerin yaygınlaşmasının asıl sebebi ticari dürtülerse de, Karadeniz’e gelen birçok alternatif teknoloji demetinden, hangi teknolojinin yerel gemilere uyarlandığı sorusunun cevabı coğrafi faktörler ve bu teknolojilerin birbirine uyumu sorunu belirlemiştir. Basitçe ifade edecek olursak, ticari gemilerin yol aldığı suyun özellikleri gövdesini, rüzgârının şiddeti armasını ve yelkenini belirlemiştir. Bu dönemde açık denizlerde yol alan gemilerde Atlantik ve Hint okyanusu kökenli yelken ve gövdeler, geleneksel gemi ve yelkenlilerin yerini alırken, kıyılarda yelken açan gemilerde bu değişim sınırlı kalmıştır.

This study scrutinizes the maritime change in the South Black Sea region from 1792 to 1829. During the 40 years of integration, new hull, sail, and rig types replaced the former. The main argument of this article is that new market conditions and geographic factors determined the technologic change. Although the main reason for the distribution of new technologies was economic factors, the geography and the compatibility among the technologies determined which technologies to be adopted to the ships among a set of possible new technologies. It demonstrated that the integration of Black Sea to global markets lead a technological change in the sailing ships with various degrees with three decades. It argues that while the hulls and rigs from Atlantic and Indian Oceans replaced traditional ones sailing in the open sea, the ships following the coastlines remained the same.
